Caste-based Institutions and their Social Implications

It is often observed that in our country, many social institutions, particularly hostels, bear names associated with specific castes. Examples include Jat Hostel, Rajput Hostel, Brahmin Hostel, Meena Hostel, Yadav Hostel, and so on. When we label hostels based on caste or varna from the beginning, we are not sending a positive message. Instead, we are inadvertently fostering caste-based discrimination and bias among students.

If our country claims to be secular, such nomenclature does not reflect the essence of "secularism." The time has come to put an end to the tradition of naming institutions based on caste identities.

I recall a personal experience from a long time ago. I underwent a transfer to a remote area in Rajasthan. Until I could bring my family along, I planned to stay in a well-known and respected hostel/guesthouse in the area. The food was decent as well. When I contacted the hostel manager, he plainly stated that this hostel was established by a particular community and was not meant for everyone. I requested that it was just for a few days, but the manager remained adamant.

It was then that I began to ponder whether such social institutions or hostels that remain exclusive and uphold their caste-based mindset serve any meaningful purpose in society. What is the relevance of their social service and caste pride if they do not come to the aid of those in need?

In a diverse and pluralistic society like India, it is crucial to promote inclusivity, equality, and fraternity. Naming institutions based on caste not only perpetuates stereotypes but also reinforces social divisions. We should strive to eliminate this practice and instead name hostels and institutions in a way that reflects the principles of secularism and unity in diversity.

It is high time that we reevaluate the tradition of naming institutions after caste identities and work towards a more harmonious and inclusive society where everyone is treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their caste or background. Only then can we truly embody the principles of a secular and equal India.

Using caste-based nomenclatures for hostels or any public spaces is not appropriate as it perpetuates discrimination and inequality. Instead, consider using more inclusive and neutral titles, such as:Student Residences,Dormitories,Halls of Residence,Living Quarters Accommodation Centers, paying guest hostels etc.
